The Chess Classroom Kit
Published Updated
A practical starting kit for a class, club or homeschool group: printable sheets, an ordered beginner curriculum, and a site students can play on with no accounts, no ads and no student profiles.
What’s in the kit
- Rules cheat sheet — core playing rules at a glance, with links to the full rules when a dispute needs more detail.
- How the pieces move — a diagram and one rule per piece.
- Board setup diagram — light square on the right, queen on her colour.
- Printable chess board — a full-page board with coordinates.
- Notation cheat sheet — read and write moves.
- Score sheet — 50 numbered move rows, tournament-style.
- Checkmate patterns — four useful mating positions to recognise.
- The beginner path — a free, ordered curriculum from the rules to full games.
A first lesson that works
- Set up together. Hand out the setup diagram and have every pair build the starting position themselves — light square on the right, queen on her colour.
- Start with three pieces. Teach rook, bishop and queen from the pieces sheet, then play mini-games (e.g. pawns plus one piece each) instead of full chess on day one.
- Full games early. By the second or third session let them play complete games; keep the rules cheat sheet on each table to settle castling and en passant questions.
- Add notation when games get serious. The notation sheet plus the score sheet turn writing moves down into a habit — and written games can be replayed and reviewed later.
- Follow the beginner path for what to teach next: check and checkmate, the basic mates, and first tactics, in order.
Why LibreChess in the classroom
- No student accounts. Nothing to sign up for — no email addresses, no passwords, no student data to manage.
- No ads or student profiles. There are no accounts or analytics cookies; games and puzzles run in the browser and students’ moves and progress stay on the device. Cookieless aggregate pageviews are described on the privacy page.
- Free at the point of use. The sheets, lessons and browser games have no paywall or premium prompt.
- Designed for ordinary browsers. The sheets and lessons are lightweight. Engine strength and speed depend on the managed device, so test the play page on school hardware before a lesson; after the required app and engine files have loaded and been cached, play can continue without sending moves to an engine server.
- Copy freely. Every sheet in the kit may be printed, photocopied and shared for classroom use without asking.
