Play Chess vs the Computer
Play Stockfish for free, with no account and no game upload. Choose one of five labelled engine levels or six named opponents with different search and move-selection settings, then review the finished game locally.
Opponents for every level
- Stockfish, five labelled levels — from deliberately forgiving play to skill 20 with a short local search.
- Six named opponents — five use different style weights and controlled randomness; Maximus uses Stockfish skill 20 with a short local search and no deliberate style bias.
- Odds games — make the engine start without a knight, rook or queen to adjust the material balance while you learn.
- Two-player pass-and-play — share one device with a friend.
Tools while you play
Choose Infinite, 1+0, 3+0, 3+2, 5+0, 10+0 or 30+0; show a live evaluation bar; ask for an engine hint; take a move back; and see the opening name as you play. When browser storage is available, a finished game is saved locally. The review grades the moves and then highlights up to three moments in everyday language, with one position to retry.
Why play here
The engine runs in your browser, so the site does not impose a server-side game quota and your games are not uploaded for play or review. After the app and engine files have loaded successfully, play can continue offline on that browser while its site data remains intact. New to the game?
