How to Study Model Games for Strategic Understanding

A model game is useful because it clarifies a recurring strategic problem, not because a famous player won it beautifully. Passive replay produces recognition without decision-making: the plans look obvious once the moves are on the board. Active study asks you to predict at critical moments, compare your plan with the game, and explain how one advantage changed form. A small collection revisited carefully is more valuable than hundreds of games clicked through once.

Choose games by the problem you need to solve

Prefer complete games so the opening decisions, middlegame plan and endgame consequences remain connected. A fragment can teach a pattern; a model game should show how the position acquired that pattern.

Use three passes with different jobs

Separating the passes prevents annotations from lending you their conclusions before you have tried to think. On the final pass, distinguish a move that was forced from one chosen for strategic reasons.

Fischer–Petrosian — find the next phase of the plan

In Fischer–Petrosian, Buenos Aires Candidates Final 1971, White’s active rooks have already invaded. The position shown is after 24.Rc7, with Black to move. Before replaying the continuation, ask: what is Black trying to contain, which white piece can still improve, and what target will matter if the rooks are challenged?

After 24.Rc7: predict the plans, then replay the continuation through 29.Ke3.

What to extract from the continuation

After 24...Nd7 25.Re2 g6 26.Kf2 h5 27.f4 h4 28.Kf3 f5 29.Ke3, White has not forced matters with checks. The rook remains active, the king improves towards the centre, and the fixed d5-pawn gives the pieces a lasting target. Black’s pawn moves seek space and restraint but also create fixed points. The transferable lesson is the change of pace: once maximum rook activity is established, king activation and target fixing can matter more than another immediate incursion.

Annotate turning points, not every move equally

Mark the move where the pawn structure changed, the moment a piece acquired a stable route, the best chance for counterplay and the transition into the ending. At each mark, write the rejected candidate and why it was inferior. Routine recaptures can be noted briefly. This produces a useful map of decisions rather than a transcript crowded with symbols.

Build a small dossier around one structure

Collect three to five games that show different outcomes: a clean plan for one side, an active defensive scheme, a failed execution and, where possible, an endgame arising from the structure. Add a one-page summary of typical breaks, exchanges and manoeuvres. Revisit the positions from memory a week later; retrieval reveals whether the ideas became usable.

Use engines last and selectively

An engine is excellent for checking tactics and locating missed alternatives. It is less useful when its top line is copied without explaining the strategic function. First write what you think each critical move achieves. Then use analysis to challenge that account and investigate large evaluation changes.

If the engine prefers a move no human note mentions, ask whether it solves a concrete tactical problem or represents a reusable idea. Not every machine refinement belongs in your model-game notes. Keep what improves future decisions.
